WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Area residents will have an opportunity to “meet the artists” featured in Missouri State University-West Plains’ first Campus Community Spring ARTWORKS Exhibit from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Gallery on the mezzanine at the West Plains Civic Center, 110 St. Louis St., West Plains.
Sponsored by Missouri State-West Plains’ academic affairs office, West Plains Council on the Arts and the West Plains Civic Center, with partial funding from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, the exhibit features more than 40 works by 16 members of the campus community, including faculty, staff, students and alumni, organizers said.
Artists whose works were accepted for display in the exhibit include Alex Webb, Brian Hite, Patty Ingalls, Grayson Gordon, Sean McCormick, Forrest Ogden, Barbara Williams and Sherrill A. Thompson, all of West Plains; Rayne Vanderpool, Licking; Terri Combs, Pottersville; Nate Ferree, Elk Creek; Sarah Corniels, Willow Springs; Ngozi Ekeke, Springfield; Floralyn Groff Perry, Hartshorn; and Marlene Thompson, Mountain View.
MEMORIAL EXHIBIT
In addition, a special memorial exhibit will feature works by the late Jonathan Woods, a former Missouri State-West Plains student from West Plains who, after graduating with an associate’s degree from the local campus, completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and later studied oil painting and drawing at Lorenzo De Medici in Florence, Italy.
Woods started the first art club at Missouri State-West Plains and later returned to the university briefly to teach computer graphics programming. In his last five years, he combined his love for art with his passion for theology and eventually founded a Christian art ministry. He was actively involved in creating and donating art pieces to raise money for the food relief program at Christ Fellowship in Miami, Florida.
“Members of the Art Department at Missouri State University-West Plains extend a special ‘thank you’ to Larry and Evelyn Woods for their generous support to establish a memorial of their son, Jonathan Woods. The Jonathan Woods Memorial is a purchase award that will be displayed as a permanent exhibit on the Missouri State-West Plains campus,” organizers said.
EXHIBIT DATES
The exhibit opens April 16 and will continue through May 7. Admission is free, and visitors may stop by to view the artwork during regular civic center hours. Those who attend the April 29 reception will have the opportunity to vote on a Patrons’ Choice Dean’s Award, organizers said.
